Recently, we have kept answering questions concerning AP courses and AP exams. We therefore gather the following answers to AP related questions, as well as other standardized exams. We welcome all students and parents to visit CCO for further information.

Are You Ready for Exams?

I have taken/will take AP courses in school. Should I also register for AP exams?

You can take AP exams if you are confident to handle them. AP exams will help to demonstrate your academic level and ability. However, if you find the AP courses at school quite difficult, it is not recommended to register additional AP exams, since school AP course scores are accounted for in GPA, which is more importance than scores of AP exams and is worth to be ed on.

Are You Ready for Exams?

When should I take my first AP exam?

If you will apply for the Ivy League, you are suggested to take your first AP exam(s) in May of Grade 10. You can try several subjects you are good at. When applying for college, only AP exams during Grade 10 and 11 are considered. You can still take AP exams in Grade 12, but universities/colleges have already made admission decisions by then.

Are You Ready for Exams?

What's the difference between SAT2 and AP? How should I choose?

First, none of the American universities/colleges require students to submit AP scores when applying, but in principle, Top 20 universities or engineering colleges in the United States recommend or strongly recommend applicants to submit SAT2 scores.

Second, SAT2 exams are made of multiple-choice questions, while AP exams consist of both multiple-choice and writing questions. Generally speaking, AP exam requires a deeper level of understanding in the subject area. As SAT2 is an academic exam in high school, scores cannot be used to apply for credit reduction or exemption in university study. As a pre-university course, AP exams can be used to replace certain college courses by achieving required results.

Third, SAT2 exams take place many times throughout the year, while AP exams are only held once a year in May.

I'm now in Grade 11 and under great pressure. I therefore want to spend more time preparing for TOEFL and SAT, and leave AP courses to Grade 12. Is that reasonable?

We always need to make trade-offs, and it is reasonable to give priority to TOEFL and SAT. Please note that when applying to college (especially ED and EA), exam results from Grade 9 to 11 play important roles, and AP exams in Grade 12 are basically not helpful for admission.

Can all AP exams be taken in mainland China?

A:不是的。
No, it isn't. Some AP exams cannot be taken in mainland China, but can be tested in Hong Kong. You can refer to the official website for subjects available in mainland: http://www.apchina.net.cn/Home/Time Schedule.

Are You Ready for Exams?

Can AP be self-taught? How to learn?

A:可以。
You can learn AP by yourself, although some AP subjects, especially those with experimental contents, such as biology, chemistry, or others like arts, are difficult for self-study. If you are self-taught, you need to download curriculum from CB website and find suitable textbooks online. Students with strong self-study ability may go through that, but for the vast majority, we still recommend to participate in relevant classes to study and prepare for exams under the guidance of teachers.

Are You Ready for Exams?

I got 3 points in AP exam. Should I submit it to the university?

Students can selectively submit AP scores. If you need credit reduction and exemption, many universities require 4 or 5 points to consider, but for application, it depends. If you achieve 3 or 4 points in some difficult subjects, such as biology, English literature and writing, you are advised to submit it. But for easy subjects, such as calculus BC, in which more than 40% students get 5 points, it is better not to submit.

Are You Ready for Exams?

I did not go well with TOEFL. Can I change to IELTS?

First, if you want to study in the United States, try to take TOEFL; if the United Kingdom, Canada or Australia, IELTS is recommended. In fact, TOEFL and IELTS are recognized by most universities/colleges in the United States, Britain and other countries, but there are always exceptions. Therefore, check with the institutions you are going to apply for.

Second, TOEFL is totally computer based, while IELTS is paper based with an interview, in which you will talk to a real person.

TOEFL and IELTS can be related as follows:

Are You Ready for Exams?

Can SAT be tested many times?

Some top universities, such as Cornell University, require applicants to submit all their SAT/ACT scores., so we suggest that SAT / ACT exams should not be taken more than four times.

Are You Ready for Exams?

I have high scores in standardized exams, will I be guaranteed for top universities?

Universities in Britain, Canada and Australia are likely to make admission decisions on your academic achievements, while universities in the United States will consider more factors, such as course difficulty, extracurricular activities, essay writings and so on. Therefore, you will not be guaranteed even you have high scores.
